This spring, the City of Rawlins Parks, Golf, and Streets crews teamed up to revitalize the baseball and soccer fields at the Sports Complex near the Rec Center.
Over the years, the condition of the southwest baseball field has made it unsafe for teams to play. In March, the Streets division scraped the turf from dugout to dugout, and the Parks division cleaned and leveled the infield. Their work made it safer for teams to practice and play on the field this baseball season. In the coming months, additional renovations will be completed by Golf and Sport Solutions to further ensure safe play on this field. Parks & Recreation Director Nikki Howell shared, “The hope is to bring back the days when Rawlins teams could host tournaments and league play with teams from across the state. Our local baseball programs’ volunteers, city staff, and funding agencies have put significant work into both the Sports Complex and VFW Fields over the last few years to make this dream a reality.”
Carbon County School District #1 Recreation Board provided funding for overseeding and fertilizing the Sports Complex to help us regrow the turf. With assistance from the golf crew in late April, the Parks division used the old golf course greens covers to tarp the west soccer fields after seeding and fertilizing. When the covers were taken off in late May, the grass had come in tall and strong on most of the field. Thanks to the Rec Board for their funding support and to the community for keeping dogs and people off the tarps.
