Managing the raven population at the Rawlins landfill is an ongoing maintenance effort. Ravens are overpopulated and aggressive at and around the landfill. This has been an issue for City staff, visitors to the landfill, and surrounding ranchers. They have caused human health and safety issues, in addition to damaging livestock and equipment. To manage the population, the City of Rawlins partners with USDA Wildlife Services for a raven take permit.
An avicide that specifically targets ravens will be applied at the landfill. The close monitoring and gathering of the remaining avicide during the project ensures safe and effective results. The residual chemical amount in the bird remains is negligible, resulting in no secondary toxicity and causing no danger to pets or other animals.
The USDA Wildlife Services performed a lengthy process at the federal level to assess alternatives and to determine environmental impacts. USDA fieldwork begins mid-April.
