[ARCHIVED] Recycling Center Changes

Dumped Trash 2

Due to excessive misuse of our recycling bins, the City of Rawlins Recycling Center will only receive recyclables during open hours. We are also expanding our Recycling Center hours to include Mondays. The Recycling Center will now be open Monday-Friday from 8 am to 5 pm as well as Saturday from 8 am to noon.

The misuse of our after-hours drop-off bins on Daley and Knootz Streets has led to significant problems. Over the past year, 7,460 pounds of non-recyclable waste have been improperly disposed of in these bins. This not only increases the workload for our recycling crew but also results in financial losses for our landfill. Items that have been found include construction materials, rotting household trash, diapers, bags of dog excrement, and more.

The amount of trash that has been dumped at the recycling center puts the financial stability of both the landfill and the recycling center at risk. As Enterprise Funds, they are required to be funded by user fees and cannot use normal governmental fund sources, such as sales tax. We cannot afford to lose landfill fees and staff time to illegal dumping.

The Recycling Center accepts Aluminum Cans (for cash), Cardboard, Paper Board, Clear Plastics #1, Colored Plastics #2, Milk Jugs, Glass, Paper, and Clean Steel Cans. Our staff is always willing to offer assistance with unloading. For more information on recycling, please call 307-328-4569 or visit www.rawlinswy.gov/recycle
